A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING CHARLIE WORSHAM FOR HIS OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A YOUNG MUSICIAN IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, Charlie Worsham, born September 1, 1985, in Jackson, Mississippi, is the son of two musically talented parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Worsham; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Worsham attends Grenada Middle School where he is a seventh grade student; and

WHEREAS, a talented young musician, Charlie Worsham is an award winning young man blessed with extraordinary gifts of playing the fiddle, the banjo and the piano, which is his best instrument; and

WHEREAS, while in kindergarten, Charlie Worsham began piano lessons with Cindy Dugan, whose excellent guidance allowed Charlie to get the foundation he needed to excel in his other instruments; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Worsham has received numerous awards for his piano playing including Superior-Plus ratings for six years by the Teacher's Guild of America, Superior ratings for four years by the Mississippi Music Teacher's Association and in 1998, took first place in the competitive category for the State of Mississippi in the Bach Music Festival at Hinds Community College; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Worsham has also been awarded prizes for playing the banjo and the fiddle in the Mississippi State Fair, placing third in 1995, for the banjo; finishing second in 1996, for the banjo and in 1997, taking second prize for the banjo and fourth place for the fiddle; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Worsham was invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, where he demonstrated his remarkable musical skills on the banjo when he made a guest appearance with Opry star Mike Snider; and

WHEREAS, after his outstanding performance at the Grand Ole Opry, Charlie Worsham received a standing ovation from the audience; and

WHEREAS, a model student who makes straight A's, Charlie Worsham is not only talented musically but academically as well; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Worsham discovered a love for spelling in the fourth grade and began entering spelling bees, winning the MPSEA District and State first place and taking fifth place in the regional competition in Charleston, South Carolina, in the fourth grade; placing second in the MPSEA District and State and winning first place honors in the Southeast Region in the fifth grade and placing 14th in the Big Bee sponsored by the Commercial Appeal in Memphis in the sixth grade; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his achievements in Spelling Bee Contests, Charlie Worsham won the DAR Essay Contest in the fifth grade, the Arbor Day Poster Contest in the fifth grade and placed third in the school Science Fair in the sixth grade; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Worsham was a member of the Grenada Middle School sixth grade band and voted "Outstanding Band Member" by his peers; and

WHEREAS, because of his talent, Charlie Worsham has been given the honor to play the guitar and fiddle in the Grenada High School Jazz Band; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature finds it most appropriate to pay special tribute to such an outstanding young musician as Charlie Worsham, who has made a remarkable contribution to the cultural life of the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Charlie Worsham on his amazing talent as a musician and his outstanding achievements in academics.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Charlie Worsham and the Capitol Press Corps.
